The circumstances of Lissar’s escape were heartbreaking and brutal. This book gave me all the feelz. If it weren’t for the dogs, I’m not sure I could’ve read it. But for all that, it really is a beautiful story. If you enjoy fiction that delves into painful experiences in a fairytale framework, this is one of the best examples out there. The fact that Deerskin only told the truth once another young girl was in danger is also very common in adult survivors who maintained the secret throughout childhood, often up until the point that they have their own children and realise they have to protect them from the perpetrator in their family. How accurately it portrays the degradation and healing is a complicated question, as this is the fantasy world portrayed by the books rohin I read when I was younger, and the more adult themes we call these things adult when it is the children whom we refuse to stand for does not cancel out the dragons, or the time travel, or mckinleyy haunting. Fat generally equals ugly or ugly-mannered and slim is beautiful now matter what – even when Deerskin is basically an emaciated albino running around she is still considered lovely.

It might be a spoiler, but no one mdkinley stumble upon that by accident so I’m leaving it out here for all to see. I think McKinley tackles the subject of rape very well. There were a few other minor problems with the book, it was repetitive, and I think it would be rather too charitable to assume McKinley did this deliberately.

Her one companion is her dog, Ash, a condolence gift from Prince Ossia, and the two are inseparable. I might read it again, someday, when I’m more comfortable with the themes. McKinley’s version is darker, because of the detail of it. I spoke about this in my review of Carve the Mark. This magical black and deegskin vision assists the amnesia-stricken princess by granting her mckinlry new identity, the gift of time to heal, and an indestructible white deerskin dress.

They were ways of rationalising the brutalities of life, of creating a happy ending beyond the horrific events that might be suffered. This story has what I guess I would call flowery language, whereas my creative writing teacher would call it “dead wood”.

For me, I struggled through it, but it’s largely what makes me ambivalent about the story. I really liked this book overall.

The final weakness of this story was the dereskin. Part Three was good, but not the rousing conclusion that Part Three merited. The rest of the book is about her healing, and her recovery, and the way she comes into her own power. There was loyalty and puppies and a beautiful princess.

That’s why I bought it.

When she mentions that she needs work and likes dogs, prince Ossin, who is in attendance, assigns her to raise a litter of puppies whose mother had died. Deerskin is manifested as the moon goddess sort of and confronts her father in front of all the wedding guests.

I tried skimming, but the descriptions and inner monologues went on for pages. I will not argue with anyone who thinks themselves threatened by what I have to say here, as my time and my energy are my own, and I will not spend it on sea lions and dog whistlers.
